The start of the 2017 lobster season off southwestern Nova Scotia is tentatively set for set for Tuesday for LFA 34.
But again, it’s all dependent on the weather.
The season was postponed for Monday because of strong winds.
Conference calls were held this morning among DFO Yarmouth, Environment Canada and port reps from LFA’s 33 and 34.
Dwayne Surette, the South West Region’s Chief of Resource for DFO, was on the calls.
“We’re going to have another call tomorrow (Monday) morning to make sure the weather doesn’t change and that the weather is still safe for them to set. For LFA 33, we didn’t open for Tuesday, We’re going to wait until tomorrow, we’re going to decide tomorrow morning on the weather call.”
Surette says for Tuesday, Environment Canada is giving diminishing winds but those winds will pick up later.
” So we’re looking at the stronger winds being after 7 or 8 o’clock at night. We’re kind of worried about how much they’re going to pick up and how fast. So will it be into Wednesday or will it still be Tuesday when they pick up ? We’re not sure.”
Surette says he understands that delays are frustrating for fishermen, but it’s all about their safety and trying to determine the best window of opportunity for them to set their gear.
