Bridgewater Elementary School Playground A Work In Progress

Plans for a new playground at Bridgewater Elementary School are slowly taking shape.

The old play structure had to be torn down this summer because it had become unsafe.

Playground Committee member Marcy Rogers says it’s not going to be a quick fix.

“We’ve found that we have bedrock in underneath which adds an extra cost because then you’re drilling in to the bedrock. It all costs money for equipment and installation and all that.”

Rogers says the cost for the new playground could end end up between four and five hundred thousand dollars.

She says they’ve raised around $80,000, but much more will be needed.

Rogers credits the Town of Bridgewater for committing over $70,000 to the project.

“We really look at this as being a town playground. It’s right in the centre of town. We have daycares that use the playground after school, parks and rec through the summer…”

Rogers says South Shore Regional School Board has also provided labour to help with construction.

An obstacle course and climbing wall replaced the old structure at the beginning of the school year.

Rogers says that’s just the first phase of the project.

She says they expect the playground to be built in several phases over the next three or so years.

Rogers says the are hoping corporate sponsors may come forward from the community to speed up their fundraising efforts.

Any wishing to donate can do so by calling Bridgewater Elementary School.
