P.R.O. Kids Program Out of Money

A program that helps underprivileged kids access extracurricular activities has run out of money.

Janice Rand helps run P.R.O. Kids for the Municipality of Lunenburg.

She says there’s no money left in this years budget, meaning some kids will have to go without.

“We put out word that we’re out of funds and sometimes people come through with donations that will help us get through. We have to get through to April 1 that’s when our new budget starts.”

Rand says this isn’t the first time money has gotten tight.

” Almost every year we run out around this time of year. But, I was just comparing last year with this year and we are beyond where we were last year at this point.”

She says they need support from they community so they can continue to meet the growing needs of kids in the area.

Meanwhile Deanne Oickle-Conrad says she’s seen the effect sport has for kids.

She coaches a number of community programs and says P.R.O Kids has plays a huge roll in allowing kids to take part.

“I would say 15% to 20% maybe in some of our local recreational groups are using P.R.O. Kids funding to participate”

She says she’s seen the impact P.R.O. Kids can have.

“You know it just provides them learning activities, it provides them skills and teamwork, It provides them skills in life.”

Oickle-Conrad says communities have a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate.

She says she’s working on a couple of fundraiser ideas to help get P.R.O Kids through the lean times.
