A wind farm in Hants County is about to get a little busier.
Environment Minister Margaret Miller approved phase three of the project in Ellershouse, which will see an additional three turbines constructed and operational by next spring.
There are seven turbines currently on the grid.
The Alternative Resource Energy Authority is responsible for the project and includes Mahone Bay, Berwick and Antigonish.
Mayor David Devenne says it’s a unique situation that allows the three to collaborate.
“It’s a win for the electrical consumers in those three municipalities. It’s also a win for the people of West Hants, who are generating tax revenue and work opportunities in that part of the province.”
Nova Scotia’s plan is to have 40 per cent of energy generated through renewable sources by 2020.
Minas Basin will have to meet many conditions with the project approval including monitoring local wildlife.
The company also has to have dialogue with the community to address complaints and provide resolutions.
