Fine Returned AND Funds To Be Raised – It’s A Feel Good Friday

After another week of summer things being cancelled I thought the best thing for a Friday is to pass along a couple of feel good stories.
Let’s start with the historic wrong that was made right. Part of this province’s shameful history takes us to a movie theatre in New Glasgow. The year is 1946 and the lady that is pictured on the most recent Canadian $10 bill, Viola Desmond was arrested and dragged out of the theatre for refusing to leave a whites-only section. Desmond was charged on Nov. 9, 1946 with attempting to defraud the provincial government based on her alleged refusal to pay a one-cent amusement tax. Thanks to an Ontario high school student, that fine and the court costs of $26 have been repaid and turned into a $1000 scholarship from the Nova Scotia government.

Student project spurs Nova Scotia to repay fine levied against Viola Desmond

The second is a feel good story in the making. One week from today we will be holding our 11th Gift For the Heart Radiothon, raising money with the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore. This huge event is not only a great day of feel good stories, big smiles and fun times, but in the end we are also helping to improve equipment and services at South Shore Regional Hospital. You don’t have to wait until next week to help out either. If you text “GIFT” to 20222, this will make a one-time $20 donation to Radiothon. You can also get in on a 50/50 draw, get tickets on baskets of goodies, and again this year we have an auction full of fantastic finds.
