DUCK It! Safe Ways To Say What You Can’t Really Say.

In this job I was always taught that “street language” has to be left at the door, so nothing inappropriate slips out when the mic is on. I always joke that I am only one word away from unemployment, but that is the scary reality of a job like this.
That fear of a misspeak is also carried through regular life when kids are around. I remember when my sister first had children, I was always scared I would let a 4-letter word slip around them. Now with children of my own, it is a constant worry because they pick things up so quickly.

It is believed that most children add about 10 to 20 new words a week. Between the ages of 18 to 24 months

Our oldest is like a parrot and I know the words I would not want him to hear, those are the ones that would be learned the fastest.
This Christmas was a good example. I was changing blown bulbs in the Christmas lights and dropped one that shattered on the floor. I might have left a certain 4-letter word slip out starting with “S”… So all season, whenever lights were noticed on the tree, our little guy would say “SH*T”.
So if that does happen, what can you do if the resulting vocabulary continues? Luckily the novelty wore off for him, but if it doesn’t…

So the missed hit with the hammer that lands on your thumb, or the trip and fall while carrying something that lands on your toe, what can you do?
Well the best thing is to use alternative words that are not “Bad”, but hopefully just as satisfying. Here are some examples:
