Today is celebrated as “Word Nerd Day” It’s a chance for “grammar geeks, language lovers and word nerds to unite” and celebrate.
We are so lucky as Canadians to have the opportunity to decide what version of English we want to embrace, haha.
There is of course the English we are taught in school, and is always ‘evolving’ … Though I sometimes question where it is headed, example Six-SEVEEEN.
We can also choose to use Canadianisms. Yeah, there is even a dictionary if you want to go this route.
Dictionary of Canadianisms on Historical Principles 3rd Edition
We have some great terms in this country and depending on what end of Canada you are on, they can vary. If you don’t believe me you need to spend some time in Newfoundland, or just travel around this province and take note of how different the terms used are. From hangin out with Yous Guys in Cape Breton to callin on a Pard or the Young Fellers down in Yarmouth county.
A study was conducted to determine the top slang terms in the great white North and no surprise what the top term was. Check out the video below.
Giver a play and have a great day eh.
Happy Word Nerd Day.
