High-Speed CAT Ferry Service Returning To Yarmouth

The high-speed CAT ferry is back for the Yarmouth to Maine service.

A 10-year deal has been struck by the Nova Scotia government and Bay Ferries Limited.

The company has secured a vessel from the United States Navy.

The province is providing almost $33-million to Bay Ferries over the first two seasons for start-up, operating, retrofit and marketing costs and terminal upgrades in Yarmouth.

Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan says it’s a significant investment for the province.

“We are very aware of the financial pressures we face as a province. But, our goal was to put a stable, long-term agreement in place and a service that can best support the tourism industry in this region.”

Meanwhile, company CEO, Mark MacDonald, expects demand on accommodations in the region due to the ferry schedule.

“She will be based in Yarmouth; leaving Yarmouth in the morning and returning at night.”

The ferry will run from June 15 until September 30.

It will depart Yarmouth and Portland daily at 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively and returning to Yarmouth at 9 p.m.

The ferry trip from Yarmouth to Portland will take about five and a half hours.
