The Mic Mac Rotary Blues: A forgotten local favourite

I absolutely love finding old local music from Nova Scotia or Atlantic Canada! Back in the day, getting your song on a 45 was no easy feat. There are so many interesting and incredible musicians here in Atlantic Canada, and I think it’s important to remember the ones we haven’t heard from in a while too!

Bryson – Lysens were a talented folk duo from Nova Scotia. The group consisted of Sandy Bryson and Darrell Lysens. They were best known for their local hit, Mic Mac Rotary Blues, released on local record label Solar Records in 1982.

I was very excited to get my hands on a copy of this 45. They are pretty rare to find!

The song talks about many frustrations we still face while driving in the city, (including the Mic Mac rotary that used to be near the mall) and the annoyance of high gas prices and working life. Some things never change.

The great Betamax King has an amazingly clean version of the song!

  • Ben Holmes has lived on the South Shore of Nova Scotia for most of his life and has a deep passion for the culture and community of Nova Scotia and the Maritimes. He believes strongly in the importance of radio and other local media, and the role they play in keeping communities informed, connected, and entertained.
He is the host of “Breakfast With Ben” on CKBW in Bridgewater. When he is not talking, at least not into a microphone, Ben enjoys spending time outdoors, cycling, watching films, taking road trips, and being around family and friends.
