Comfort watching is on the rise — Here’s why (plus the most rewatched)

People are all about the nostalgia and that’s what the science says, anyway. Canadians are rewatching their favorite TV shows in high numbers, for quite a few different reasons. According to surveys done by Roku a few years ago, in 2024, 7 in 10 Canadians regularly rewatch TV shows or movies they’ve already seen. That’s a big number.

So why is this happening? A big reason is stress and mental fatigue. People want something familiar — something that requires less effort to watch and think about. Streaming has also made choice stress a real thing. There’s so much content ready to watch now that it can feel overwhelming. Many also like to think back to simpler times, when TV was an event. You had to wait for the next episode of your favorite show, and you could catch reruns when it wasn’t on.

Regardless, this is the new way to watch, and I think there’s space for both new shows and our old favorites. Here are the top rewatched shows that Canadians can’t get enough of!

The Office

Friends

Schitt’s Creek

Modern Family

Parks and Recreation

Brooklyn Nine‑Nine

Grey’s Anatomy
