Bridgewater: Public Transit Pilot To Be Discussed In Budget Deliberations

The Town of Bridgewater is looking to its residents for input on a potential bus service.

Council recently endorsed a transit study by CBCL Limited Consultant Engineers.

Town staff is in the process of collecting financial details and planning to establish a six month pilot program.

Mayor David Mitchell says a bus service would impact every demographic in town.

“Students getting to a job or getting to school, getting lower income families a more economical way to get to the grocery story or their place of work or even people to Michelin or the hospital to work or for appointments. It impacts everybody in a positive way.”

Mitchell is hopeful the pilot would run this fall, if approved through budget deliberations.

The study indicated a fixed route service would be preferred with a 20-passenger bus, running from 6 a.m until 9 p.m on weekdays and using a separate schedule on weekends.

Cash or bus tickets would be used with an option of developing a smart card system.

Mitchell says stops aren’t finalized but the hospital, LCLC, mall and NSCC were recommended.

He says there were other suggestions made that could be implemented.

“Which would be the purpose of the pilot, to make sure that we’re stopping where we should stop. There would also be a flag stop system. It would allow in many of the areas people to actually wave down the bus to hop on.”
