A significant rain system is moving into Nova Scotia tonight and will continue through much of Friday, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall and localized impacts.
Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for parts of the province, including Lunenburg County, Queens County, Shelburne County and Halifax Regional Municipality.
Ian Hubbard says the system is expected to bring widespread rain, with totals reaching around 50 millimetres in some areas and possibly higher in localized downpours.
He says the rain will begin Thursday evening, continue overnight, and persist through most of Friday before gradually easing from southwest to northeast.
Hubbard says there will likely be periods where the rain becomes heavier, with the possibility of thunderstorms adding to rainfall totals in a short period of time.
The heaviest rain is expected along the Atlantic coast of mainland Nova Scotia, while areas farther east, including Cape Breton, are expected to see rain but with lower totals overall.
The system is expected to remain all rain, with temperatures staying above zero due to mild air moving in from the south.
Drivers are being advised to use caution, especially during heavier downpours when visibility may be reduced and water can pool on roads.
Looking ahead, conditions are expected to improve on Saturday, with another system possible later in the weekend.
