Nova Scotia’s emergency shelters expand to two daily meals with $1M provincial boost

Emergency shelters across Nova Scotia are now serving two meals a day, following a $1‑million annual provincial investment aimed at better supporting people experiencing homelessness.

The funding establishes a consistent meal standard province-wide, resulting in about 142,850 additional meals each year across 19 emergency shelters.

Opportunities and Social Development Minister Barbara Adams says reliable access to nutritious food is a basic need that helps people focus on rebuilding their lives.

COO of Souls Harbour, Cherry Laxton, says the added daily meal improves stability within shelters and allows services to move beyond crisis response, creating better conditions for recovery and helping people transition toward permanent housing.
