Michael Kenneth Johnston

It is with profound sadness that the family of Michael “Mike” Kenneth Johnston announce his peaceful passing on May 12, 2026.

Born on September 17, 1942, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mike was the beloved son of the late Francis and Kenneth Johnston. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Mike lived a life grounded in compassion, faith, and service to others.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Jean (née Harlow), and their six children: Timothy (Jane), Derek (Andrea), Colin (Katrina), Catherine (James) Banks, Andrew (Rochelle), and Patrick (Abigail). To his family, he was a steady source of guidance, warmth, and unwavering love—a wonderful father whose presence shaped their lives in countless meaningful ways.

Mike was a proud and devoted grandfather to eleven grandchildren—James, Virgil, Owen, Eamon, Hunter, Reese, Griffin, Gavin, Simon, Anna, and Leia—and a cherished great-grandfather to Amora. He is also survived by his brother Derek (Evangeline), his sister Mary Lou (the late Michael) Coolen, and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who came to be regarded as part of his extended family.

Mike pursued his education at Saint Mary’s University, earning his Bachelor of Arts in 1964 and later a master’s in social work in 1968. He went on to dedicate his career to public service as a social worker throughout Nova Scotia, including serving as the province’s Director of Welfare. He was known for his commitment to advocating for others and took great interest in engaging with leaders at all levels of government to bring about positive change.

In 1976, Mike and Jean settled in Chester, where they raised their family. Mike became a familiar and beloved presence in the community, particularly at his children’s sporting events, where his encouragement and kindness left a lasting impression on many. The Johnston home was a welcoming place, often filled with neighbourhood children gathering to watch games, enjoy movies, or seek Mike’s thoughtful advice.

A devoted member of St. Augustine’s Church, Mike’s strong and enduring faith was a guiding force in his life, and it now offers comfort to those who mourn his loss.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Ridgewood Assisted Living for the care and community they provided over the past year, as well as to the compassionate team on the fourth floor of South Shore Regional Hospital, whose kindness supported both Mike and his family during a difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike’s memory may be made to Development and Peace, or to Chalice, supporting children in need.

Mike will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and the love he shared so generously with all who knew him.

Visitation for Mike will be held from 6-8pm, Monday May 18th, 2026, in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. Memorial Mass will be held at 1pm, Tuesday May 19th, 2026, in St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 105 King St., Chester. Interment will follow the service in St. Augustine’s Church Cemetery. A reception will also be held following the service in Tuck Hall, 60 Regent Street, Chester.
