George Ernest Townsend

Age 95, passed away suddenly yet peacefully at South Shore Regional Hospital with family by his side on May 17, 2026. Born on March 14, 1931, in Allendale, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Robie and Erna (Firth) Townsend. George was the beloved brother of Mildred (Melvin) Goulden, Roy (Norma) Townsend, Willard (Geraldine) Townsend, and Margaret Rose (Harold) Hodgson.

He was predeceased by the love of his life and devoted wife of 72 years, Sarah Muriel Townsend. George leaves behind his loving children: Heather (Frans) Hoveling, Cindy Townsend (Darren Rosta), Yvonne Townsend (Paul Rochford), and George Townsend (Kerrie Revels).

He was a proud and loving grandfather to Daniel (Paige), Sarah (James), Jennifer (Brent), Diana (Evan), Christian, Luke, Ben, Emma (Brent), and George Jr. (Bethany). He was also blessed with many cherished great-grandchildren: Joslin (Jeremy), Mariah (Brady), Dominique, Noah, Liam, Brody, Ryan, Kylie, Lucas, Brennan, Hudson, Ethan, and Owen. And lastly, but certainly not least, he leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he thought the world of.

George’s work ethic began at an early age when, before and after school, he loaded coal onto the trains that passed through Lockeport. At the age of 16, he ventured to the big city of Halifax to begin work at Citadel Motors, where he worked alongside many wonderful people, including a blind mechanic whom he greatly admired. Throughout his career, George worked in the automotive industry as Manager of the Irving Bulk Plant, TexPark Manager, and later as an Instructor in Automotive Servicing at Lunenburg Regional Vocational School, where he taught alongside his brother Roy.

One of his favorite pastimes was hunting with his father, brothers and brother-in-law.  The stories never got old. He was a devoted member of the Anglican Church Men’s Club and served faithfully as past treasurer. George loved tinkering and building cars — and when we say building cars, we truly mean it. One day he came home with only a frame, four wheels, and a steering wheel and proudly announced, “This is our new car.”

To us he was Pa, Dad, Papa, and Uncle George. To everyone who knew him, he was a kind, gentle, loving, and deeply devoted man. There was never a husband more dedicated to his wife of 72 years. Even after her passing, he still spoke to her every night, telling her about the family, how everyone was doing, and reminding her every single day that he loved her. To his children and grandchildren, he passed down the true richness of family.

Since 1992, he organized Townsend Family Reunions every two years — gatherings that created thousands of treasured memories filled with laughter, love, stories, and togetherness. We learned the love of Christmas gatherings and to always make room for one more at the table.  Music filled the air with the sounds of accordions, guitars, harmonicas and the singing of Christmas Carols.

How do you write in a few words about a man who lived for 95 years and touched the life of every person he met?

You cannot.

You simply hold tightly to the memories, the lessons, the laughter, and the love he gave so freely.

And for that, we will be forever grateful.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday May 27th, 2026, at 11AM, at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 78 Alexandra Ave., Bridgewater. A private Graveside Service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, The Osborne Cemetery Fund, or charity of your choice. Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater.
