Two impaired driving crashes keep RCMP busy in one day

RCMP officers responded to two separate impaired driving crashes in the span of a single day.

Around 3 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to a report of a white SUV in the ditch between the landfill and Sheet Harbour. However, when they patrolled the area, they did not locate the vehicle.

Then, around 3:50 p.m., officers say they received a second report regarding the same vehicle in the ditch near Boutilier’s Settlement Road in Spry Bay.

This time, officers found a 20-year-old man inside a Jeep Grand Cherokee showing signs of impairment. He then failed a roadside breath test, along with two additional tests at the station, registering 90 mg% each.

He was released and will appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court at a later date.

Then, just after 9 p.m. that same day, officers and first responders attended another single-vehicle crash off Crowell Road, where a Volkswagen GTI had also gone hit the ditch, injuring both people inside.

Before RCMP officers arrived on scene, firefighters had located the driver attempting to leave and brought him back to the crash site where they observed signs of impairment.

The driver, a 19-year-old man from Head of Chezzetcook, was arrested for impaired driving.

He and an 18-year-old passenger were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

While at the hospital, a sample of the driver’s blood was taken for analysis to determine blood alcohol concentration.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
