Halifax Chamber of Commerce calls failed tariff negotiations “a serious setback”

The Halifax Chamber of Commerce says they stand with team Canada.

After tariff relief negotiations have broken down with the United States, the group that represents more than 2,000 organizations says they will be there to support businesses through the uncertain time ahead.

In a press release from Halifax Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Don Bureaux, he said the breakdown of the Canada-U.S tariff negotiations is a “serious setback” for the business community, and that the impacts, including delayed investment and rising costs will be felt immediately.

Despite that, the organization says they expect Canada to stay united, and that they support the “serious and disciplined approach” taken by the federal and provincial governments so far.

The group said businesses in the Halifax region have shown “remarkable resilience under immense pressure”, and are advocating for the government to “get back to work on what we can control”.

They’re calling on those same governments to continue opening internal trade markets, make the economy more competitive and resilient, diversify trade opportunities and to remove barriers for procurement and labour mobility to make it easier for business to scale.
