October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and remind Nova Scotians that booking a screening mammogram is easier than many people think.
In fact, some women across the province are receiving email reminders from the Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program letting them know it’s time to schedule their next appointment.
One of the biggest misconceptions about mammograms is that they require a doctor’s referral. In Nova Scotia, eligible individuals can book their own screening appointment directly through the program by calling 1-800-565-0548. If you are 40 and older, have no new breast symptoms, no breast implants, no personal history of breast cancer, have waited at least 1 year since your last mammogram and have a valid provincial health card, you can book an appointment.
Screening locations and schedules are available through the Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program website.
With a history of Breast Cancer in my family, I have been getting mammograms for the last 5 years. If you are nervous for your first one, just know you have nothing to worry about. The appointment takes about 20 minutes.
