Flags have been lowered to half-mast in Lunenburg following the death of Joe Feeney.
The former mayor of Mahone Bay died suddenly last week while on vacation in the Bahamas at age 71.
Lunenburg Mayor Rachel Bailey says they decided to lower their flags because of Feeney’s impact to the community as a politician who worked closely with the town.
“We do share a lot in common with the Town of Mahone Bay and we’ve always worked closely together. He really was well-respected and a strong representative of his community.”
Bailey says she was shocked and saddened to learn the news.
She says the town lowers its flags for former employees and other significant people.
“We felt it was important to lower the flags in honour of (former) mayor Feeney in his passing because he impacted this community and as a statesman in Lunenburg County.”
Feeney retired last year after serving the Town of Mahone Bay for 31 years including 27 as mayor.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, and sons Joseph and Tim.
