Nova Scotians have another reason to be proud.
Halifax has earned a spot on National Geographic’s Best of the World 2027 list, joining just 25 destinations and travel experiences from around the globe recognized as must visit locations for the coming year.
International Recognition
The annual list is compiled by National Geographic’s travel experts and highlights destinations offering unique cultural experiences, important anniversaries, improved accessibility, or new reasons for travellers to visit.
For 2027, Halifax made the cut thanks in part to its role within a newly created UNESCO Tourism Corridor and its rich cultural heritage.
A City Shaped by Many Stories
National Geographic praised Halifax for its blend of Mi’kmaw, African Nova Scotian, European, and immigrant traditions, noting that visitors can experience those stories through cultural centres, museums, guided tours, and historic sites.
Among the attractions highlighted were:
- The Wije’winen / Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre
- Africville, a UNESCO-designated Place of History and Memory
- The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21
- Various cultural and historical experiences throughout the region
The publication described Halifax as being “at the centre of Atlantic Canada’s heritage revival.”
In Good Company
Halifax shares the list with destinations from around the world, including locations in France, Egypt, and Australia.
The recognition places Nova Scotia’s capital among some of the most talked-about travel destinations for the year ahead.
A Reason to Explore Closer to Home
While many people dream about travelling across the world, National Geographic’s recognition is a reminder that extraordinary experiences can often be found much closer to home.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong Nova Scotian, Halifax continues to earn attention for its history, culture, waterfront, and the stories that have shaped the city over generations.
And now, one of the world’s most recognizable travel publications is encouraging others to discover it too.
