Group Calls For Bigger Minimum Wage Hike

The new minimum wage in Nova Scotia is being implemented today.

A 10 cent jump will see minimum wage workers getting paid $10.70 per hour.

But, some people aren’t impressed with the raise.

Jonathan Brigley from the Fair Wage Coalition says it isn’t enough to cover the rising cost of living.

“Food products, you see bills, you see utilities like power,” he says, “all increasing way more than ten cents will do for a regular minimum wage worker on a biweekly salary.”

Brigley says a ten cent bump isn’t nearly enough.

“Minimum wage should be at least $15.00 so then people are making enough money that they can put more into their local community and help feed the economy that’s in their area.”

The group is planning a protest in Halifax on April 15 to demand the provincial government take another look.
