Donations To United Way Down From Last Year

Twenty-seven programs in Lunenburg County have just received funding from the United Way.

More than $175,000 has been raised to support community non-profits, with the bulk of the money going to help children.

Coordinator Michael Graves says without United Way fundraising, some of these programs wouldn’t exist.

“Money is pretty tight,” he says, “and for a lot of these non-profits United Way money is the difference between a good program and a great program…and in some cases no program at all.”

Graves says donations coming into the United Way are down and have been slowly declining over the last few years.

“The numbers are down, and honestly, next year the numbers that we invest in the community will be even lower because this year’s campaign didn’t go as well as we were hoping. So, we’re going in the wrong direction.”

He adds it wouldn’t take much to turn things around.

He says a little bit of change from every working person would give them more than a million dollars to invest each year.
