NS Government Decides Against Privatizing Registries

The province has decided against privatizing motor vehicle, land or joint stock registries.

Service Minister Mark Furey says the province will develop and implement plans to modernize the systems.

New IT systems are required for support.

Furey says that process should begin in the next eight to 12 weeks.

“The systems supporting the registries are old and were not capable of bringing them to the modern world and offer applications on smartphones or for online services.”

The services have been reviewed since November 2014 and determined a private-sector option had too many uncertainties.

It was the first full review and cost the Nova Scotia government $825,000.

The cost to upgrade the three registries is over $30-million.

Those upgrades will start in the next 12 to 18 months.
