Buried Fort At The Lunenburg Academy?

The oldest feature at the Lunenburg Academy could be underneath the building.

An archeologist from Saint Mary’s University has found some promising evidence that the remains of a 300-year old fort could be buried there.

Henry Cary along with a handful of students will be excavating a small area next month.

He says it could be an important find.

“It will hopefully give us an idea of how much survives of that fort,” he says, “but also may give us some indication of how much survives of other defences that were built around Lunenburg.”

Meanwhile, Rachel Bailey, Mayor for the Town of Lunenburg, is excited to learn more about the history of the area.

She says she would even be interested in lending a hand.

“Digging in the dirt sounds like a lot of fun, and actually coming up with something of historical significance would be a definite bonus,” she says.

Bailey says the town won’t allow the dig to put the academy at risk.

However, she says, the dig site is small and she doesn’t expect any problems.

The dig is scheduled to begin on May 14th.
