MLA Says Government Support For Sexual Assault Victims Is Important

The MLA for Lunenburg West says one of the special moments of 2017 was creating policy to allow victims of sexual assault better access to justice.

Mark Furey is also Justice Minister and says a program to grant free access to lawyers for victims will help them to navigate the court system.

“I think back to my policing career, and very aware and familiar with the challenges that I faced at that time trying to advance the best interests of victims and how challenging that was.”

Furey says he feels a combination of regret and excitement when he sees how volunteers dedicate themselves to ensuring the voices of victims are heard.

“I know how important this work is to them and how important this change is to them. That’s where the emotions are triggered.”

He says the discussions that led to the new policy have been happening for a long time.

Furey says he government will continue working with dedicated volunteers to make the justice system a more comfortable place for victims to come forward.
