Recent Nasty Weather Not Kind To Yarmouth County Trail System

The recent severe weather was not kind to the trail system in the area.

But the dedicated volunteers with the Yarmouth County Trail Development Association have been working hard to keep the trails open.

The association has re-developed the old railway bed in Yarmouth County into an 87km multi-use trail system and it requires regular maintenance at the best of times.

President Ron Day says the high winds at Christmas took down quite a number of trees along the trail from Yarmouth to East Pubnico.

“In one spot there were more than 15 trees crossing the trail. those have been opened up so people can get through.”

He says they’re now cutting up those trees into smaller pieces that can be more easily removed from the site.

Day says there are a number of areas where water has flowed across the trail but he says those sections can’t be repaired until the spring when the ground is thawed and a grader can be brought in.

He says the most expensive damage to the trail was in East Pubnico area where storm surges eroded the shoreline back and undermined sections of trail.

He says heavy machinery will be required in the spring to place rocks and other material that have been washed away.
