A number of key issues are still on the table as the Nova Scotia government negotiates with its health care unions. Both sides have been engaged in mediation since the government passed it’s new health authorities legislation. A major stumbling block remains which union will represent workers. Tory leader Jamie Baillie worries rural hospitals will lose their voice under a merged system. “My concern has been hospitals like South Shore Regional, Queens, Fishermen’s Memorial….our plan was to cut administration but make sure health care outside of Halifax was at the table. The Liberal plan is all based in Halifax.” Nova Scotia is moving to merge its health authorities and reduce the number of health care unions. Arbitration hearings must be complete by January 1.
