The province has tightened regulations when it comes to protecting cats and dogs. Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell says people aren’t allowed to tether dogs for more than 12 hours a day. There are also new requirements for transporting pets and new rules for outdoor care and shelters. Colwell says changes were needed. He says, “We hear these horror stories of dogs, in particular being tied outside and dying from lack of food and shelter, all kinds of things which is not acceptable in our society today and other acts of cruelty against animals.” A veterinarian certificate will also be required to sell cats or dogs. Enforcement officials can now issue fines between $233 and $693.
