Upper LaHave Couple Celebrates 50 Years Of Public Service

A Lunenburg County couple are being honoured for 50 years of service.

Wilfred and Jean Feener have been with the Dayspring Fire Department since it was founded in 1966.

Jean is a member of the Women’s Auxiliary, and Wilfred, who served as fire chief for 20 years, still drives trucks and maintains the equipment.

Jean says the community’s need for fire service is what inspired them to start volunteering

“We were in the process of buying a piece of land and thinking about getting married. We were interested in having fire coverage, so we got it in before we even started a home.”

She says they’re willing to serve as long as they can.

“Wilfred still answers the calls no matter what time of day or night, and actually we just catered two weeks ago a training session at the hall, Saturday and Sunday, and I worked both days.”

The couple received a certificate from Premier Stephen McNeil to thank them for their dedication.
