Province Updates Civil Weddings Program In Response To Public

The Civil Weddings Program is being updated making it easier for couples looking to get married outside of the church.

Until now small communities in Nova Scotia didn’t have enough Justices of the Peace.

The province has announced they’re hiring more in response to public demand.

Director of Court Services Peter James says it was a province wide problem.

“Even in Metro Halifax, it was difficult to find people to preside over civil weddings,” he says.

The program is also implementing required training for new J.P.s, and a flat rate for wedding services.

He says the changes will come into effect over the next few months.
