Shelburne: Salmon Processing Centre Delayed

There is a delay in a salmon processing centre in Shelburne. Cook Aquaculture has indicated to the town and municipality that the proposed facility won’t be built this year. The company has stated it won’t be completed until 2018 at the earliest. Warden Roger Taylor says it’s disappointing news. He says, “I think we look at the possibility of the processing plant in the Shelburne area as a lifeline for our community. We’ve been experiencing declining populations and obviously we need jobs and people living in our areas.” Cooke Aquaculture blames the delay on a provincial moratorium on building new sites. Company spokesperson Nell Halse says they remain committed to bringing additional jobs to rural Nova Scotia. The processing centre is expected to create up to 400 jobs in Shelburne County.
