Students, Staff Safe After Fire At Bayview Community School

A small fire at Bayview Community School in Mahone Bay caused students to get sent home early today.

Fire was detected shortly after 9 a.m. in a washroom that is attached to a grade primary classroom.

A paper towel dispenser caught fire.

All students and staff evacuated the building safely as firefighters from Mahone Bay were called to the scene.

There were no injuries.

Director of Operations, Brian Smith, says the damage was limited to a classroom.

“We haven’t assessed the damage yet. Of course, this is a P3 school and the owner of the school, Nova Learning, has been contacted.”

Students were sent home at 10:45.

Principal Craig Pottie issued an email to staff this afternoon, letting them know that grade primary students would not have classes for the rest of this week.

Clean-up is underway to remove the smoke odor and the rest of the school will be operational on Wednesday.

Roughly 430 students attend classes at Bayview Communtiy School.
