MODL Hoping To Host Meeting With Pentz, Petite Riviere Communities

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is opening its ears on school closures.

Council has agreed to meet with the Pentz and Petite Riviere communities with their schools pegged to close in July 2018.

The South Shore Regional School Board and Greater Petite Area Community Association have a judicial review scheduled for September 7.

Communications Officer, Sarah Kucharski, says communities suffer when rural schools close.

“They suffer in jobs, they suffer in community engagement and they suffer in being able to attract young families to that region and then businesses as well.”

Kucharski say supporting the association means standing behind the community and saving rural infrastructure.

But the costs are unknown and it could set a precedent around future school closures.

A meeting is expected to be held before July 31 when council begins its summer break.
