For the last 16 years, June 7 has officially been known as German Settlers Day.
One of the people who pushed for it to be recognized says he’s frustrated few people seem to know it exists.
Tom Ernst says he would like to see more promotion of German heritage.
“It’s a time when we recognize people of German descent, which is probably close to 50% in Lunenburg County and probably 35-40% in Queens County. They’re the people who basically settled this area.”
Ernst says he’s not asking for much, just public education so people can learn about the contribution made by German settlers.
He says his group along with two others met with the province recently and he hopes next year will see more celebration.
