Rising Water Levels Threaten Lunenburg

A world heritage site on the South Shore is at risk of being threatened by climate change.

A new report issued by UNESCO names Lunenburg as one of 31 sites that could be affected.

The 108-page report suggests higher water levels will result in more damage from storm surges and flooding in parts of Old Town that have not previously been affected.

It also says many buildings and roads are vulnerable, and among those most at risk is one of Lunenburg’s major tourist attractions, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic.

Mayor Rachel Bailey says the threat isn’t imminate but she’s still taking notice.

“It highlights the fact that we cannot be lazy or lackadaisical about this threat.”

Bailey says the town developed a climate change action plan in 2014.

She adds, they are taking action to mitigate problem areas as quickly as possible.

Other sites at risk include the Galápagos Islands, the Statue of Liberty and Yellowstone National Park.

The full report can be accessed here.
