The South Shore Regional School Board will hire several new teachers this year.
Seventeen positions will be added to help reduce class sizes.
An additional three teachers will be hired after the province announced funding to improve literacy last week.
Director of Finance Wade Tattrie says he didn’t expect to see that many teachers this year.
“And that’s quite unusual. I think that’s the first time that’s happened since I’ve been here. Normally, we will at least reduce our NSTU positions by the approximate decline in enrollment expected for the following year.”

Tattrie also credits lower diesel and gas prices with helping to balance the $76.1-million budget.
He explains it’s a delicate line to walk.
“From a provincial perspective we’re supposed to provide a balanced budget, nothing in the deficit. From a practical perspective, you wouldn’t want to balance a surplus because that means you’re leaving resources on the table.”
The complete budget will be available online in the next couple of days.
