Fort Mac Resident Happy To Be Home

A former Riverport resident is seeing and feeling the aftermath of the Fort McMurray devastation.

When Tiffany Wentzell and her boyfriend got evacuated, they grabbed their pets and took off.

“We had no idea what we were doing or where we were going because we only had $500 to live off of.”

Wentzell grew up in Riverport but moved to Fort Mac about a year and a half ago.

Yesterday, some evacuees were allowed to return.

Wentzell arrived to what she now calls ‘home.’

“When you got close to town, like, out by the airport, literally just everything on the highway was burnt, black ashes. It was really upsetting to see, there’s a whole hill side gone.”

She says, “There’s still hot spots and the fire is still actually going, but you just got to live with the fear I guess.”

Wentzell was one of the 80,000 plus to be evacuated, but says she was happy to return despite how hard it was to see.

She says she is happy to be back and hopes to move forward.
