The reality of competing at this summer’s Olympic Games still hasn’t set in for Graeme and Jacob Saunders.
The brothers from Chester were announced to the Canadian team last week by Sail Canada.
They will sail in the men’s two person 470 boat.
Water quality has been questioned in Rio with sewage pollution identified at Olympic venues.
Graeme Saunders says he doesn’t suspect it will be a problem.
“The pollution is pretty evident. You can tell when the tide is changing because of the colour of the fresh water coming in from the ocean versus the harbour water. Luckily, I think the good portion of our racing will actually be a little further offshore.”
The brothers are currently in the UK competing in a world cup event.
There is also the threat of the Zika virus.
However, the brothers will not waiver in their first Olympic competition.
Jacob says they will take precautions.
“The risk is relatively low. The disease doesn’t sound so bad, just the negative possible effects to newborn babies. But, we’re definitely going to be careful there with bug spray and everything.”
The two are also fundraising for their Olympic journey and there are multiple ways you can help.
If you click here and select ‘Saunders Brothers’ under the 470 heading, you can donate via Paypal and receive a tax receipt.
They also have a website, email, and Facebook page.
