Shelburne: Town’s Attempt To Cut RCMP Officer Denied By Province

Shelburne’s attempt to reduce the number of RCMP officers covering the town has been denied by the province.

The town asked Ottawa to cut the number of officers from four to three.

However, Nova Scotia’s Department of Justice stepped in, saying they couldn’t support the town’s bid.

Mayor Karen Mattatall says the province is concerned about the level of service.

“They have indicated that it’s their responsibility to ensure an adequate and effective level of policing.”

Police costs make up about $650,000 of the town’s $3.7-million budget.

Mattatall says they can’t afford to pay for the service and are looking for help.
