MODL Approves Plan To Eliminate Straight Pipes

The Municipality of Lunenburg has made one 12-year old girl very happy.

Stella Bowles has been raising awareness about the problem of straight pipes on the Lahave River hoping those in power would do something.

Council voted 12-1 in favour of a 15 year plan to eliminate the illegal pipes.

Bowles says it’s goes to show kids can influence big change.

“It means that the river is hopefully going to be safe by the time I have kids,” she says, ” and then maybe we’ll be able to enjoy the river.”

The first step will be securing funding from the federal government.

If everything goes as planned new septic systems could start being installed as early as 2017.

Meanwhile, Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey says it was time to take action.

“Going forward it’s going to be a partnership between the homeowners, the municipality and the province to ensure the elimination of straight pipes is accomplished.

He says the province will play a big role in enforcing the legislation that will be the backbone of the project.
