National Meeting Brings Federal Dollars To Local Municipalities

Over 2,000 municipal officials from across the country gathered in Ottawa recently for the annual meeting of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

Mayor Rachel Bailey attended on behalf of the town of Lunenburg.

She says it was a great chance to make connections and share information with other officials.

“This is our opportunity to have our particular concerns married up and to have priorities set and our goals determined in what we hope to achieve in negotiating with the federal government.”

Bailey says a big part of the federal infrastructure money coming Lunenburg’s way is a result of the FCM’s work.

She says setting priorities with other municipalities gives them a greater voice when dealing with the federal government.

“Things like broadband for our rural neighbours. That’s an issue all across the country. To get the attention of our federal partners on that particular issue is another huge feat.”

Bailey says while the size, geography and population of ridings may vary across the country, the one thing all the municipal officials have in common is that decisions they make most affect the daily lives of their constituents.
