Community Hopes To Find Solutions For Doctor Shortage And ER Closures

Small communities across the province continue to struggle with emergency room closures and a lack of family doctors.

Mayor of the town of Shelburne, Karen Mattatall has been vocal about the importance of keeping these services in rural communities.

Mattatall says the town and the Nova Scotia Health Coalition will host an initial meeting for residents and officials to discuss what they would like to see done to solve the problems.

“It’s not an intention to be negative, as some people have phrased this. It’s to try to draw attention to the fact, that when you have a concern all across the province, something isn’t working right.”

Mattatall says communities need more services than they have now.

“Our geography makes it such that we are minimum over 100 kilometres from other services or from access to a hospital if ours is closed.”

Mattatall hopes by gathering voices from across Nova Scotia, they can create a discussion that will help the provincial government to make the necessary changes.

The meeting will be held at the Shelburne Community Centre Thursday, February 15 from 10:00am until noon.
