Community Working On Soft Sell To Attract And Keep Doctors

Low tech, high touch solutions could be the key to recruiting doctors to the South Shore.

A meeting in Mahone Bay last night by Doctors Nova Scotia and NOW Lunenburg brought the community together to discuss what they can do to recruit and keep doctors here.

A breakout session helped form ideas such as providing housing for doctors in residency, provinding information on social groups and recreation opportunities and perhaps getting community members to offer services like plumbing or carpentry as incentives.

Organizer Lynn Hennigar says it’s up to community members to carry this work forward.

“Our hope is that they will continue to lead and continue to meet and move forward. We’ve offered our help to connect them to each other and to us. And to supply whatever support we can.”

Hennigar says everyone has a role to play.

“It’s about the community taking responsibility for itself. It’s about us as individual patients and consumers taking responsibility for ourselves as well.”

Hennigar says making the area feel like home for physicians and their families is something everyone can do.
