Maternal Health/Midwifery Study Expands To Yarmouth

Mothers in the Yarmouth area, with children ages 0-2, are being sought to participate in a study.

Researchers from Acadia University are looking at maternal health and midwifery in rural areas.

The study has been expanded to Yarmouth and surrounding areas.

One is currently underway in the South Shore and Valley.

Graduate student and research coordinator on the project, Kayla McCarney is speaking with mothers in the area about their experiences.

Krissie Wyman is the contact person in Yarmouth and says information gathered will be helpful to the director of the Nova Scotia Health Authority’s Maternal and Child Health Services, Sally Loring.

“We had a meeting with her yesterday, the Midwife Coalition, and the more studies that are done, the more she can present to the higher-ups on whether or not they can validate spending money on midwifery services. This study is important to show how valuable midwifery care is to rural Nova Scotia and what is lacking.”

Mothers in the Yarmouth area who meet the study’s criteria are asked to contact Krissie Wyman at 902-746-0848.
