The dream of competing in the javelin at the summer Olympics is on hold for Liverpool’s Chelsea Whalen.
The 22 year-old has a torn labrum in her throwing arm and is waiting for surgery.
Whalen says she noticed tightness in her arm during her final season of competition at Florida State University.
“It was a little hard to take a first, I was pretty upset about it. But, I knew something was wrong when I couldn’t pick up a javelin last fall without the pain being too much.”
It means the dream of competing at the Olympics will have to wait until 2020.
Whalen says it’s an overuse injury but has been told she should make a complete comeback.
She hopes to be competing again in 2017.
