Lunenburg District RCMP Working To Make Boating Safer

RCMP in Lunenburg County will be taking to the water today.

They’ll be in Mahone Bay and Indian Point for an education campaign on boating regulations.

Staff Sergeant Stephen MacQueen says many people aren’t aware of some of the restrictions.

“If you do not have a galley on your boat – like a kitchen area, and a permanent toilet fixture, you are not allowed to have alcohol on your boat. So that eliminates most speed boats and recreational boats.”

MacQueen says even then, the only time you are allowed open liquor on a boat is while it is at anchor or at the dock.

He wants people to have the information they need to stay safe on the water.

“There’s a lot of people who purchase a boat, go out for a good time in the afternoon but don’t really understand the ramifications of what they’re doing, the requirements.”

RCMP will be live tweeting safety tips and regulations from the boat throughout the day with the hashtag #SeaPatrolLive.
