Department Forging Ahead With Education Reform Without Releasing Data

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU) is asking that data used to create the Glaze Report be released publicly.

The union wants to see the methods and numbers behind the the independent review before the province implements recommendations from the report on the education system in the upcoming sitting of the legislature.

Education Minister Zach Churchill says that information will be released but would not provide a timeline.

“Dr. Glaze is in ownership of that data but we’ll work with her to make sure that it’s available.”

The union says because the reforms to the education system will be ‘massive’ the methods and data should be made public so stakeholders can study them.

NSTU says they could ask for the data in a freedom of information request but say that would be too late.

“We cannot afford to be making decisions that impact the future of students based on flawed assumptions,” said union president Liette Doucet in a statement. “It is in the public’s best interests that the hidden methods and data behind the Glaze report be made available for scrutiny.”

When asked if anyone in his department had studied the data themselves, Churchill said they’ve seen summaries.

“We saw summaries of that data, so we haven’t looked at every single survey but we did see the summary of the information that was collected.”

The province intends on implementing 11 of 22 recommendations from the report in the upcoming sitting of the legislature, which starts February 27.

Educators and multiple unions representing education employees have spoken out against the speed at which the recommendations are being implemented, as we all as many of the reforms being made to the structure of the education system.
