Residents at Veteran’s Place in Yarmouth are in need of a new vehicle.
The current wheelchair accessible van is 17 years old and it’s costing a lot of money to keep it on the road.
The vehicle is used to take veterans to various activities and events throughout the year.
Don McCumber, District E Royal Canadian Legion Commander for the Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command says the fundraising is being done through Zone 12 legion branches.
“That takes in Lockeport, Cape Sable, West Pubnico, Wedgeport and Yarmouth. All of the legions are on board and some have made contributions to the van.”
95-year-old veteran Henry O’Connell is donating $1,000.
He says the residents at Veteran’s Place really enjoy getting out.
“We go out on rides, we go out for dinners, we go to all the veteran’s funerals. If we didn’t have it, we’d miss it.”
McCumber says presentations are being made to municipal councils and service clubs.
The replacement cost of the van is about $103,000.
