Queens-Shelburne MLA Wants Clarity On Damage To Aquaculture Site

The MLA for Queens-Shelburne wants clarification on damage at an aquaculture site in Jordan Bay.

Kim Masland says there are conflicting reports on the extent of damage at the site after a storm earlier this year.

Masland says residents tell her debris was lying on the coast, and they were concerned that fish escaped based on the condition of the cages.

On the opening day of the legislature, Masland brought the issue to Question Period.

She asked the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Keith Colwell to release the latest reports completed by his staff on the damage.

In his response, Colwell says they sent helicopters from the Department of Natural Resources twice, and found that no fish escaped.

She says Minister Colwell told her that it was a very serious storm, and to look at beaches in the area to see the number of lobster traps washed up on shore.

“To turn the response around and tell me to look at lobster traps washed up on shore, I think the only person that’s really trapped here on this, is the minister.”

Masland says residents need peace of mind, and she wants to see the steps taken by the province clearly explained.
