Work Underway To Determine Why Dips Have Appeared On Cape Sable Island Causeway

Crews have been drilling core holes in the Cape Sable Island Causeway to determine if there are problems beneath the surface.

Dips appeared along the pavement a couple of years ago.

Yesterday in the House, Transportation Minister Lloyd Hines said he expects a report soon and residents will be engaged if major repairs are necessary.

The town of Clark’s Harbour and surrounding communities are connected to the mainland by the causeway.

Mayor Leigh Stoddart says he’s heard some good ideas from people.

“Some of the residents have been telling me that they wish they would take out a section of the causeway and put a bridge in there, that would allow the flow of water to kind of clean up the bay and perhaps the fish would go through again, and also that would allow small boats to continue right around the island.”

Mayor Stoddart says if the causeway were built today environmentalists would insist on a bridge.

The Cape Sable Island Causeway was built in August of 1949.
